Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff was roasted on social media after getting fact-checked over false House Speaker rules.

On Tuesday, Schiff warned that Republican Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio would be in charge of counting electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election should he be elected speaker of the House.

“Today, Republicans may make Jim Jordan the Speaker. Jordan would preside over the counting of electoral votes in the next election. After he was deeply involved in trying to overturn the last one,” the lawmaker posted on the social media platform X. “Just when you think they can’t be more irresponsible, they prove you wrong.”

Schiff’s post immediately received a Community Note from X, correcting his claim that the next House speaker would be approviong the final tally of electoral votes for the next presidential election.

“The vice president, not the speaker, presides over counting of electoral college votes; and whomever is chosen as speaker in Oct. 2023 will only be speaker during the 1/6/25 electoral count if House Rs retain majority in Nov. 2024,” the note read.

The X note also cited the Library of Congress for its answer, saying: “Pursuant to 3 U.S.C. § 15, the votes of the Electoral College for President and Vice President, which have been submitted by the states, are counted in a joint session of Congress, presided over by the Vice President.”

Critics also slammed the California Democrat’s post, with many noting his lack of knowledge on how elections work.

“Schiff doesn’t know how elections work,” responded conservative columnist Tim Young. “What a maroon,” conservative actor Dean Cain ripped Schiff.

Conservative influencer Debra Garrett also replied to the congressman’s post, stating, “Community notes calling out your lies!!”

Jordan has taken advantage of his newfound notoriety by becoming the lead in the House’s investigation into President Joe Biden’s impeachment, a position that has attracted support from outside the chamber.

Conservatives have primarily focused their opposition on perceived failures by GOP leadership to put Democrats on the defensive while also relying on spending package deals to pass a variety of bills they believe should be subjected to standalone votes.
